Hi, I am a 16 year old trans guy. I have been out of the closet for around 2 years now, but I never told my grandparents, because I was scared how they would treat me afterwards and think of me. I think I would not be as scared to come out to my grandparents if not my sister and I were trans. I think it kinda might prove their a little conservative mindset (please do not take this offensive. I mean that they might think that ThE TrAnSgEnDeR SpReAdS or smt).

Rn is my mom at my grandparents house and is going to tell them in the next two days, about me and my sister. I am really anxious. I am scared that they may not take it well or not understand it. How should I cope with this?

Thanks for reading :)

(Sorry, if my English isn’t perfect, English isn’t my first language)

Your English is great! Not perfect, but good enough to get the idea across, which is what matters in language. Don’t apologise for that :)

I know this is hard and scary in the moment, but it’s not like you can control anything about their reaction. Older people tend to be a bit more set in their ideas, but if your grandparents really love you they should love you for who you are.

If they can’t see that, then that’s no big problem for you. The only thing worse than a negative relationship is maintaining a positive one by hiding your true self. If they choose to be nasty and mean, you can try to have a calm conversation with them to show that you’re still the same person they’ve always known. The most important part is time, don’t give up on them if it feels hopeless and don’t listen to anyone who tells you to cut off contact completely after the first bad interaction.

When scary things have happened or are soon to happen, just assure yourself that you will wake up tomorrow breathing. And someday you’ll wake up in an old body and these difficult events will be a distant memory, you just need to get from now to then. You’ve got this.
