i find fox news offensive
Same smh my head
I don’t speak Spanish, but based on the absolutely tiny bit I do know, would this mean quesadillas would become “little cheesies”?
Two spicy little donkeys with everything, three light meals for the boys, and a little cheesy for my wife, please.
Cancel that cheesy, she wants a little sash
little donkeys = burritos
cheesy = quesadilla
light meal? Livianos?
Taco apparently is a light meal? I don’t speak Spanish, I’m just laughing how unhinged it would sound
Even better, gorditas literally translate to little fat girls i believe (but maybe I’m wrong). Tbf, we have a processed sausage-alike that we call a hot dog so language and our perception of it is weird
So, apparently it comes from “quesada” which was a form of cheesecake, and the “illa” diminutive ending. Over time it has come to mean a fried tortilla with cheese and other fillings… except…
In Mexico City, quesadillas don’t necessarily have cheese in them. The rest of the country makes fun of them for it. But, if you’re ever in Mexico City and want a nice cheesy quesadilla, be sure to order a “quesadilla con queso”.
Damn it, now I’m hungry.
Now I want to try some huitlacoche. Sounds delicious.
Top tier comment right here, I didn’t know this.
Just spit balling, but it doesn’t make sense to translate things literally. A po’ boy is delicious, but eating a poor boy is generally frowned upon.
You laugh but the Quebec government attempted to fine an Italian restaurant for having the names of their dishes in Italian, many of which have no French name.
The Canadian government is pretty weird about that aren’t they?
Quebec government, specifically. Other provinces only require government services to be provided in both French and English but private businesses can mostly do what they want. Quebec requires private business to be conducted in French unless the customer requests service in a different language. Any non-French text or speech made to a customer before they request it can be seen as a violation. They can be a little overzealous at times.
What’s the menu like for Indian restaurants in Quebec? Are there French names for Biryani, Paratha, Paneer etc?
At a certain point I have to assume they just slap a bunch of "le"s on and call it a day
The government eventually said exotic dishes with no French name are allowed as an exception. Looking up menus of Indian places in Montreal shows they have completely Indian names for many of their dishes.
Damn, I’ve heard jokes about quebecios being snobby with their French but that seems excessive.
Which makes it all the more hilarious that the French people I know have joked about Quebec speaking “garbage French”
There are certainly stories of overzealous enforcement, but the context of Loi 101 and its amendments is worth considering.
Québecois is really interesting. It has a lot of old, outdated French in it due to the colonial connection with France being severed hundreds of years ago, where it evolved distinctly and the locals made different decisions on what to change and how to adapt to new concepts.
One could argue the French government has been obsessive about policing language much longer with the académie française.
Damn, I’ve heard jokes about quebecios being snobby with their French but that seems excessive
It’s not snobby. From an anglo perspective, here’s how it plays out in reality:
WAITER: Qu’est-ce que vous voudrais? ME: Huh? WAITER: What would you like? ME: {proceeds to order}
…And life goes on.
I mean that’s fine, but the fact that it’s required under penalty of law is absolutely excessive
What happened with that change to signage laws that was going to require tens of millions of dollars to update eg “Canadian Tire” to “Magasin Canadian Tire” and whatnot?
They’re not at all snobby. The French in France are snobby. If you try to speak to them in French and it isn’t Parisian-style french, they’ll try to switch languages on you because they can’t bear to have their dear language mangled like that.
The Quebecois aren’t snobby, they’re just obnoxious about preserving their language and culture. And it gets pretty absurd. Around the world stop signs say “STOP” even in French speaking countries. But, in Quebec they mostly say “Arret”, and when a local English-speaking community has stop signs that say stop, vigilantes sometimes change them to Arret.
Nope. The Canadian government just sighs and wishes Quebec wouldn’t be such a problem.
French is the dominant language in Quebec?
I’m not sure if this is supposed to be a joke or something, but yes. More than 90% of the people in Quebec speak French. More than 50% speak English, but for most it’s a second language.
No, it was a genuine question. I did not know It was mainly used as a first language in Quebec. I thought it was a semi-common second laguage for Canadians.
No, only in Quebec. There’s a bit of French spoken in Ontario (especially on the border with Quebec), and maybe 30% of the population in New Brunswick, but in other provinces it’s not even the second most spoken language.
For example, Manitoba’s most widely spoken languages are 1M English, 33k Tagalog, 30k Punjabi, 19k German and 15k French.
They’d deport the Taco Bell dog if it was still alive.
Man I forgot how much I loved seeing him in commercials as a kid 🥹
me too, vern
I think I’ll need a bigger box.
The U.S. government announces that four more words will no longer be permitted for use within scientific documents: Taco, Burrito, Quesadilla and Fajita.
I feel like this is fake.
Two reasons. I was unable to find a video clip of this, and it’s not nearly racist enough for these shit-hawks.
If some has the clip, please share.
Edit: 3 reason, we’re also on a shitpost channel.
It’s definitely fake. The screenshot is from around the 4:37 timestamp.
Sadly, it doesn’t matter if he said it when it is entirely reasonable to believe that he did. It isn’t the most racist or the stupidest thing this guy has said on national television.
I mean, third reason, he’s labeled as “Homan” which seems pretty close to Human but just a bit off. And that’s simply too on-the-nose for the topic.
At this point, I’m not completely sure that this administration has really only appointed the most qualified people for those cabinet positions.
Kakistocracy is the word
You can see the merit written all over their skin color.
Taco Bell was a cynical invention by Alexander Graham Bell to sell more Bell peppers.
In " Mexican "…
Snowflake racist: Burrito is a Mexican word 😭 Chad globalist: Burrito is a human word 😎
Diogenes: Behold a burrito! Holding a calzone
Agreed, Mexican food is one of the greatest culinary flavor profiles the world has known so far. This guy looks like he sits around eating mayonnaise out of the jar with a spoon. He’s probably just mad that mayo prices went up.
US scientists… Hmmm how about we start with a pure translation “Little Donkey”. Hmm less donkey, we need less donkey!..Little Dunks! How about we drop the little… Just Dunks. “I need a couple of bean and beef dunks please!” How does that sound Bob? Bob, that sounds great Bob!
“Mexican”
¡ES ESPAÑOL, MAMAGÜEVO!
How do you say San Diego in Mexican?
As a San Diegan with a lot of Mexican friends, I think it’s “El Pendejo Americano”. They always yell that when I come over.
they just call me gringo
That’s a very specific venezuelan insult. Nothing to do with Mexicans
Lo sé, soy venezolano. I used it to remark that Spanish is not just Mexican.
Ah! No! They said Mexican! You and I we both speak that. Don’t you back out on me now!
Como se dice que la chingada en venesolano?
El coño/recoñisimo de su madre, NO JODA
No soy un hispanohablante nativo. ¿Qué significa mamaguevo?
Mama = suck
Guevo = huevos = literally eggs but figuratively means balls
😂 No se enseña en Duolingo.
(Mama = Suck) + (Güevo->Huevo = Egg/Testicles/Male Genitalia) = Ball Sucker / Dick Sucker
¡Cada día aprendo algo más! ☺️
Completely glancing over the fact that there is exactly zero Mexican items at Taco Bell. Everything there is some kinda bastardized American Midwest slop. I think the only actual Spanish on the menu is “gordita” which loosely translates into
fat bitchlittle fatty (really out of practice with my Spanish), which seems fitting.Taco Bell sells tacos that are reasonably close to Mexican street tacos. Obviously not as good, but it’s a small soft tortilla with fillings, that’s what you get in Mexico too.
Burritos are also Mexican, though they’re not as common across the whole country as tacos. The modern burrito comes from Ciudad Juarez right on the border with Texas.
Most of the rest of the Taco Bell menu isn’t authenitcally Mexican, but I’d say their core menu items are tacos and burritos.
I agree with you slightly on the burrito, but I don’t think you’ve ever had a legit taco if you think Taco Bell is “reasonably close”. The legit tacos I had look like some one used the tortilla as a method of grabbing meat with onions and shit sprinkled on as an afterthought. (Not trying to insult you or sound combative, this is just how I talk)
I have relatives in Mexico, I visit regularly and we go for tacos all the time. There are lots of varieties of different kinds of tacos. Meat-stuffed tacos are not the norm in Mexico. Most of them only have a little meat and a lot of sauce. That’s what allows them to be sold incredibly cheaply. You can easily get a dozen tacos from the taco stand on the corner for what one taco will cost at taco bell. Because they’re so cheap, you can get a lot of variety from just one visit: suadero, lengua, carnitas, etc.
Taco Bell isn’t as good, and the flavours aren’t completely authentic, but it still obviously a taco. When my cousin visits Canada/USA he prefers to get burritos (from Chipotle) because he can’t get them where he lives in Mexico and he loves them. He doesn’t get tacos because they’re tacos, and he can get much better ones in Mexico.
Bro, I am not trying to turn this into an argument and I’m sorry if I sounded combative earlier. But believe it or not, I too have been to Mexico. Many times actually. And I have Mexican restaurants by me that are owned & run by Mexicans. Your description is not flawed, but I am very curious why you feel the need to defend Taco Bell so bad. I really don’t find them comparable, especially what people generally think a taco from Taco Bell is; i.e. a deep fried paper thin tortilla with ground beef, lettuce and shredded American cheese byproduct (again, this anger is directed towards Taco Bell, not you personally).
I’m not defending taco bell, I’m just saying that they serve tacos. Why are you so convinced that they don’t?
Again, not trying to escalate this into a heated argument.
But they are not equivalent. And I’m not saying Taco Bell’s tacos are terrible. Ffs, I got one maybe every other week. But they are not tacos! They may be “tacos” but they are not tacos.
He [Tom Homan] was appointed by President Barack Obama as Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s executive associate director of enforcement and removal operations in 2013.
In 2015, Obama awarded him a Presidential Rank Award as a Distinguished Executive. A Washington Post article at the time stated, “Thomas Homan deports people. And he’s really good at it.”
when people look back, they never voted for Nixon, and Obama was a sainted figure, you should not be downvoted for pointing out the truth…Obama was a politiician who sold progressive and served middle-of-the-road…
And yet, Obama was still the most progressive president of my lifetime. Which tells quite the story about American politics.
yeah, we are the petri dish for all ideas, the bloodbath of capitalism shown for the world…
mt dew Baltimore blast
Baltimore blast sounds like a designer version of naloxone
Tbf taco bell is anything but Mexican
considering that english already has a bunch of loan words from spanish that are considered “english”, they same should probably apply to taco bell menu… So are they really “spanish” words in that sense?
Didn’t you hear him, they’re not Spanish words at all, they’re MEXICAN words
/s obviously, screw this guy
Yeah they were selling Tlahco not tacos and Tlālcamohtli not potatoes.
