i left reddit for good today with their obvious attempt at controlling the narrative like the rest of big social media. long live the lemmy federation

This was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I remember seeing something a while back on r/coolguides about alternatives for various sites, including Lemmy as an alternative to Reddit. Today, I saw the writing on the wall and decided it was time.

The worst isn’t just the Luigi thing, it’s that in the future, they will most likely expand it to include any topic that the administration disapproves of.

my sentiment exactly. this is just the start of it. once they became a publicly traded company, it was no longer a social media for the people. may free speech live on ✊

I am new here, and I actually like everything about it. It’s very simplified. But the fact that it’s decentralized is the key reason to why I moved here.

Fair, I’ve always been aware of Lemmy as a paranoid schizo, but I think that I won’t want the right to use Google before they become a tool of the government to find people who speak out.

Absolutely. Actually it’s already here. I got a permanent ban last week. I suggested that Luigi had the right idea, and that we needed more like him.

Kill one rich guy - complete and utter censorship.

Be a rich guy who is a twice impeached convicted felon presidential traitor making decisions resulting in casualties over the thousands - whoah, now, wouldn’t want their feelings to be hurt!

State of the world in a nutshell.

I havent seen a lot happen if a mod goes off the deep end though. If a system can be broken in a way, its inevitable it will be. This place wil be captured by the same special interests reddit has, I’d bet money on it. But, I’ll enjoy it till then.

Oh, I mean, power tripping moderators has always been a thing, even in my phpBB forum days when I was a teenager. I’m sure some of us older than I will have similar stories about it happening on certain BBSes. But the user base and therefore impact of that moderation going to shit was much more limited in most cases.

I think that it was more the fear in that he was the closest thing to bring so many of us together since, i don’t know, maybe ever? We can’t agree on who controls the price of eggs, but we all get fucked by healthcare and rich people!

For sure! I could tell a while ago that it was happening at Reddit (autism level recognition of slight changes). There are more and more posts from places like r/Conservative making the front page. I’m sure they have help, because they aren’t ever the highest quality posts. Not that much is on the Reddit front page these days lol

It’s not so much the guy they’re afraid of, they’re afraid of what his actions could spur others into repeating. They’re afraid of what can be done to them if multiple people follow suit. And y’know what? Maybe that’s what we need now. Enough of us fearing them, and them fearing us. We don’t need them. They need us. And it’s well past the time to give them a reminder of that. Through force, if necessary. Preferably without bloodshed, but at this rate it doesn’t look good. They’ve shown time and again they don’t care about how many of us lose our lives to preventable circumstances, so it’s time to MAKE them care again.

It’s the Luigi overpowered as can be.

Naw, ever see A Bug’s Life where the Crickets only bully the ants because it’s to distract them from realizing a thousand ants are stronger than one cricket?

      Well he was super violent.

      and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, 14And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: 15And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;

Upvoting that probably gets a ban now.

I like the line by Killer Mike (“Walking in the Snow”), which I think he says he got from Dick Gregory:

“All of us serve the same masters, all of us nothin’ but slaves / Never forget in the story of Jesus, the hero was killed by the state”.

        Powerful stuff.

Edit to add: honestly that whole track rips and is super relevant right now.

I don’t know if that’s evidence he was super violent. I might guess this story was made up to prevent people of business stealing power and influence from church leaders.

It was probably more to do with the destruction of the Temple that was there when Jesus was alive but destroyed 40 years later, there are many nods to this in the gospels, because it’s trying to contextualize current events with the Christian religious movement, it was important that Jesus was prophetic, and him driving out vendors from the temple is a strong image, here is the messiah, rejected by the Jews he here to save, and he correcting them, telling them to remove vendors from temple ground, and they refused to listen, so God allowed the temple to be destroyed.

Or maybe it’s more the image of the sacrificial animal’s symbolic of the Jews being chased from their homelands by a whip god controls turned against them for their sins.
