I’d like to go to Vegas sometime. I don’t gamble but would like to see the place that gave birth to the snowclone “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”. I think there’s a good chance it’ll disappear/collapse soon due to climate change, and I want to see the “before” of a monument to man’s hubris that spits in the face of water usage.

I’ve read some older novels about Monterrey, California, and would like to visit there. That area has an endemic pine and some other neat things, some of which are also probably sensitive to climate change.

I’ve been to Las Vegas for work (and will again in a couple weeks if there isn’t a shutdown) and there are some neat things out of town, like a nearly 12k foot tall mountain. I’ve never done anything on town except for training, tho.

Before the current chaos, I wanted to show my wife more of where I grew up and maybe run into some old friends. There are also some national parks and museums I never got around to visiting that I would’ve like to. Now, I have zero plans to travel back unless someone in my family that still lives there is dying.

I might be up for a trip to Washington DC. Seems like some interesting things will happen there in the near future…

Aside from that little snark, Vegas would be great as I love standup comedy, and living in northern Minnesota, the big names almost never come around here.

DC is great, go to every museum, zoo and aquarium you can and eat lots of Ethiopian food and drink tej. DC has the highest concentration of Ethiopians in any city outside of Addis Ababa, so the food is some of the best around. The metro also kicks ass, makes it super easy to get around and I personally think it’s a stunning example of how brutalism can be beautiful.

Have you been to Acme Comedy Club in the twin cities? I’m on their mailing list and they semi-regularly send me breathless emails like “WE’VE BOOKED THIS PERSON”. I don’t know if I’m just out of touch or if they’re exaggerating the importance of the shows, but I don’t really recognize any of the names. I should probably just remove myself from their mailing list I guess

None of the comedians I like ever make it to the Twin Cities, it’s weird. They’ll perform in Wisconsin or Des Moines then go out west skipping us entirely. Do Minnesotans just generally not like comedy? It’s weird.

I just don’t make it down to the cities that often. That’s a day trip at my age.

People seriously dislike the US right now. And I get it, but I’ve always voted against this shit and advocated among my community for leftist ideals.

I blame the fascists, and not because there is nobody else to blame.

I blame the fascists because we need all the allies I can get to make this country worth visiting again.

Not really sure. Maybe there’s a lot of Vegas haters on Lemmy? It was kind an off-the-cuff pick to start the conversation more than some deeply-held desire of mine to visit.

I did notice there was one user downvoting every comment in the thread so far and they got banned. I also discovered piefed’s private voting feature, which is interesting: https://piefed.social/post/205362

Tbh I do the opposite and upvote most comments and posts here, to try to make it a more welcoming place. But I can barely fathom someone trying to do the opposite - to accomplish what, making it a less welcoming place for people to communicate, in this community of a social media platform?!

If you ever go to Vegas, check out the Double Down Saloon for me. There isn’t much in that town to lure me back, but I hear it’s wild.

I used to travel a good bit for work and I say with confidence that NOLA has some of the best food in the country.

Bev’s Seafood, crawfish, get a pound more than you think you want. Quite possibly the best meal I’ve had in my life. I still think about it 8 years later.

Also get a Bloody Mary while you’re down there (not at Bev’s, just, like, in NOLA), just make sure they put the pickled green beans in em. So fucking good.

Edit: I can’t speak to Ireland, but gotta do a proper Chicago dog dragged through the garden on a poppy seed bun. Though I can’t recommend a specific joint for it.

The Midwest had the worst food almost as a rule, the exception being the fish and chips I got at a fuckin hotel restaurant in Madison was the best I’ve had in the world, including London, an astounding compliment mirrored by my English coworker.

There are a few gems, but its usually pretty bad.

Hartville Kitchen in up by Akron ohio (amish food, the good and fattening kind). Get the roast beef and noodles, and pie with streusal top and ice cream 🤤

Fiesta Pizza up in canton/akron ohio (pizza, broasted chicken, jojos (giant broasted potato wedges)).

The Pacific Northwest and the rural California coast. The pics look stunning and I’d love to see it in person
