Do people actually eat that many eggs??? Its wild that it’s in the news so much. Why don’t they just buy cheaper food until the prices go down?

    They’re a quick to prepare, tasty, nutritious and, normally, very cheap source of protein that’s also very useful in baking. People will adjust their egg consumption accordingly, but there’s some understandable lag time. Habits take time to change.

    They’re also a staple food, so it’s understandable that they’re often reported on and used as a sort of barometer for inflation, since they’re typically so cheap.

    For reference, we go through roughly a dozen eggs a week between two people

    For a long time they were THE cheap protein. My roommate who is both a body builder and broke probably ate 30-40 eggs a week up until now. It used to be tuna but we obliterated the tuna population. They are also an amazing binding agent for baking

      It’s frustrating because as far as I have seen there is functionally no evidence to back up this cultural protein obsession we all have. Besides the inflammation, besides the cancer, besides the accompanying heart disease due to cholesterol, what is animal protein even good for?

      ‘Is it somehow a necessary nutrient for us?’ BZZZZT. Wrong. Dietary protein deficiency doesn’t exist (the only possible paths to deficiency are leaky gut or malnutrition). Possibly the only reason to eat excess protein is if you’re recovering from an injury, or something. The best way I can explain this is to that ignorant line of ‘We nEeD PrOtEiN To bUiLd oUr mUsClEs,’ your muscles have already been built and they largely don’t need to be built twice, you do not need nearly as much protein as you think you do.

      ‘Okay, but eggs are good for baking.’ Can’t you try, like, anything else? I get that people like using eggs over egg alternatives due to some obsession with living a default life where you only make default choices something about taste or whatever, but can’t y’all just try alternatives like once? Applesauce, chickpea water, flax, chia, etc, there are too many alternatives for you to try one and lump them all together like ‘oh but I tried flax but it tasted sorta off so I guess I have no options but to clog my arteries and send baby chicks to a meat grinder’

      I was serious about the “default choice” thing. It’s as if some people have a pathological need to live the most ‘normal’ life possible. It permeates every aspect of our society, from people worrying they haven’t gotten worried yet to kids searching up the average age for a 1st kiss to discrimination against the LGBT to psych medication noncompliance to people in hard circumstances holding the worldview that everyone is struggling just like them, all because otherwise they’re the weird ones, and being weird or unnatural is bad and icky, but being normal and doing what everyone else does is good and happy

      It’s just- so damn infantile.

        I mean yeah, I know all this. I don’t eat animals products and don’t need them. I don’t get it either lol, tbh I think it was just marketing that caused this.

          Yeah I know what you meant :)

          I just got into an argument with my roommate group recently over egg protein and it was annoying me, and when I get annoyed I write long rants of counterarguments against ppl who aren’t in the room… Am I too much of a stereotypical vegan…? (T-T)

    I’ve tried flaxseed and chiaseed eggs and they don’t hold a candle to eggs as binder in food, but besides for cooking recipes, I don’t know why people are freaking out so much. It’s worth getting 4 chickens for your backyard, I can highly recommend it, both for companionship but also the free eggs, and they’re a great way of disposing of kitchen waste as they eat just about anything. I know this is a vegan sublemmy, I’m just saying, if you want eggs, earn it.

      Chickens are so awesome :)

      We originally took one in that was being neglected (the whole story is longer, but that’s the essence). We thought it was a hen, and got a second one as company because one chicken isn’t going to be happy.

      Well, the first one was actually a rooster.

      His crowing has managed to pull in a few volunteer hens from the feral flocks in the area, though they don’t tend to stay long and once they leave the fenced in yard with the big scary guy willing to shoot a coyote that tries to bother them, they don’t come back.

      But just our pet hen lays almost every day, and since we aren’t daily egg eaters that’s plenty right there. The ones the volunteers lay are just nice extras.

      Since the rooster is too big to actually manage a cloacal kiss, nothing ever gets fertilized, and none of them have gone broody. Hell, the pet hen, when she lays inside, she gets all loud, comes over to one of us and squawks like crazy until we go get the damn egg, so she can fix her little nest lol.

      And they really are good company, even the feral ones. Our two pets are an endless source of joy, and the current volunteer is outright friendly as long as you don’t pick her up. She follows right behind me and the rooster when we’re piddling in the yard. She’ll peck at my pant cuffs, looking for treats; or she’ll do this weird little dance to get my attention, then run back and forth to the door, hoping I’ll go and get a treat. You could say she believes in a transactional relationship: we give her treats, she gives us demands for treats.

      Before this, I had just put the hen to bed after two hours of her snuggled up under my arm, trilling while I played games with my wife. How can you resist that? I can’t lol.

      There’s a product called Ener-G Egg Replacer and works perfectly for baking and baking only. Obviously it doesn’t work for making things tasty “eggy” like in an egg bagel or challah, but it’ll work for any other baked good without issue.

      I use it in my vegan baking all the time. With the price of eggs, I’ve been using it in lieu of eggs in my non vegan baked goods too.
