Reddit’s about to get shittier. Again. Either they’ll kowtow to Musk and make it against the rules to ban X links or they’ll give some bland, noncommital, centrist statement about how they respect the hard work their mods put in to keep Reddit going or whatever. I really doubt they’ll make any unequivocal statement condemning Musk as the neo-Nazi shitbag he is.
The second reddit pulls some pro-Elon conservative bullshit, expect Lemmy to be FLOODED.
Reddit is a liberal haven and there will be a mass exodus if they toe the President Musk line.
If the API price-gouging scandal didn’t bring them all over already, then you might be surprised just how many continue to hang on there, even after this one. And the next one. And the next.
It’s just how people are. We don’t want to change.
It will bring some people over. But I doubt there will be a flood.
The API and pricing bullshit would have had 0 impact to people that (somehow manage to) us the Reddit app.
It affected power users, mods and technically proficient people.If communities have agreed to take a stance against musk/twitter/Nazis and Reddit overruled that, then I imagine an exodus of people that the API debacle didn’t affect.
But I don’t imagine it will be huge. Luckily, it will likely be decent people. So Reddit will slip more into a cesspool. And maybe more people will leave
I came over to Lemmy during the API pricing thing. I’ve never used a smartphone app (official or otherwise) to access Reddit. Just
old.reddit.comvia a browser on a clicky-typey computer. I quit Reddit out of solidarity. And because it was clear Reddit was getting shittier in every way.Same story for me. I never used the mobile apps or modded any community, I just don’t want to contribute to a site that’s hostile to the creators and users that made it successful in the first place. I imagine there are a lot of ordinary users like us that came here for the same reasons.
Not just proficient users, but old users. 3rd party apps were all Reddit had, at first (besides the site itself, of course). The official app was the newcomer to the apps scene.

IRC is based. I hate that so many games these days only use discord. Such a bloated pile of shit when so many only use it to send messages.

Self hosting exists. This is why decentralisation is important.
Something only exists until it’s banned. If we get to the point where they ban alternatives, I guarantee they’ll start going after self-hosting next. Profit line must always go up, as they’d say.

Also other countries exist so unless they want to go full on China good luck enforcing it if its hosted outside the US. If they do go full on China I can stop caring about the US as they become irrelevant to my internet experience.

Fediverse, as much as I love the idea, isn’t even close to accept even a portion of people who will flock here when reddit totally dies. It will crumble upon itself the same day. Two third of instances will immediately run out of credit and shut down, the rest will be overwhelmed by traffic and devolve into a slow mess full of trolls and spam.
Fediverse needs to grow organicallyThat’s the power of decentralisation, Trolls will have to create their own shitty instances and wr can block them. Look at what’s going on with Hexbear. Reddit can fucking die, I’m not worried for the fedi.
And if you want shitty instance, you can make an account on that shitty instance, no one will stop you. Fediverse is amazing.
They will not create their own instance, they will come to ours. And we don’t have neither computing power to support all of them, nor enough skilled moderators to respond to all that, not enough of a routine and etiquette to quickly understand whom to kill and who is there legit.
I can see it all evolving over time, but I am really not optimistic about the scenario of Lemmy trying to accommodate to even a 100k people overnight. And reddit is much bigger than that.

Found my way back to Lemy today as well for something similar. I’ve noticed just in the past few days the comment threads on even mundane threads have gotten really weird. It could be a post about a picture of a hummingbird and it would devolve into strange politics. Weird pro CCP and North Korea stuff lately too. It’s weird.
