To protect against those pesky “hackers” that want to steal your information at public wifi?

Nah. Enable HTTPS-Only mode and VOILA! (Make sure to x out of browsers the moment you see a warning screen)

To post “I HATE [Insert Name of Country Leader] and I hope he/she dies and go to hell!” on a forum?

Hell fucking yes. Especially if you are in an authoritarian country. Use both VPN and Tor, don’t use real names. Even in democratic countries, still use VPN, since power is always shifting. What’s legal today might not be legal tomorrow.

I was using a vpn for everything. It was slow, it took forever to connect, I was having issues with websites I have to use for my business blocking them.

It was great if I wanted to look at a geo locked website, or video. It worked when I sailed the high seas (theoretically, as no one has ever said otherwise to me).

For every day use it ended up being such a pain I stopped connecting to mine unless I needed it.

I literally have two machines running on always on VPNs, one my personal PC and another a home server were a torrent service is running, and have no such problems.

I think maybe the mistake you made was spending most of the time with it OFF and then turning it ON once in a while, whilst mine just goes ON as soon as I boot my machine and stays on.

Granted, I’m not using it for getting around geo-locked websites, I’m using it for having a bit more privacy and for safety when sailing the high seas so once in a while I have the opposite problem (that I’m blocked from accessing sites in my own country because the connections appear to be coming from a different country).

Nah homie, I am from LATAM, no good reason, no eyes care for what I do online here.

The only reason (and the most popular among the people I know) is to get better content (AKA USA) on streaming sites such as Netflix lol… And I have been using ProtonVPN free as of recently because it is an easy way to get rid of my IPv6 connection in my Android phone (why is this so unnecessarily hard to achieve BTW!?) because I think my ISP is shit and can’t handle IPv6+IPv4 sites properly or IDK… I get huge delays browsing sites like Trakt and Plex from my Android phone… And I am afraid I use both servcies daily… YouTube and Spotify also take its time loading, all these issues go away once I switch to an IPv4 network only.

Oh, and some Lemmy images take longer to load here too!

Not quite… The video covers this, as does our overview:

Using a VPN in cases where you’re using your real-life or well-known identity online is unlikely to be useful. Doing so may trigger spam and fraud detection systems, such as if you were to log into your bank’s website.

I think this is dumb, what if I’m traveling and I want to check my bank. SMDH, I hate the geoblocking bullshit the internet is full of nowadays

Thanks I always regretted getting surfshark for streaming since they scammed me with their 99.00 plan and their YouTube channel is basically an even worse version of Linus Tech Tips

Sorry to ask: can you include a summary?

I don’t often get time to watch videos, even short ones.

A VPN transfers trust from the ISP to a VPN provider

Encrypted DNS does not stop ISPs from seeing the ip addresses of the websites you visit

      For anonymity use TOR

Does Icloud private relay work good enough for non-illegal activities?

I use something different for torrenting obvs.
