Apparently I placed 41% of all the pixels placed by people in my instance.
…Huh.
100% on my instance!
I’m the only user and placed one pixel, but hey! I won!🎊
That’s a lot of pixels!
wait I just saw you had figured out average pixels/user for the top instances, what is it for mander.xyz? (idk where to find the amount of canvas users/instance, or is it just all instance users, whether they participated in canvas or not?)
did I make the pixels/user for mander.xyz crazy?
(For some reason my blahaj comment didn’t federate)
Yes, yes you did. 590 average pixel count for mander.xyz.
I am using the log file that was provided in the announcement post https://cdn.sc07.company/canvas/2023/pixels.log.txt
There aren’t any of these stats in the file, so we have to find them ourselves.
So basically I am only looking at rows that are “user placed” (which doesn’t remove the undos completely, but it’s easier to do this) then I find an instance I want to look at and only grab logs from that. I then count each uniqe user and that’s the user count for that instance. Then I divide Total Pixels by User Count to see how many pixels on average are placed by those users.
cat pixels.log.txt | grep "place" | awk '{print $3}' | awk -F"@" '{print $1" " $2" "}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr | grep "mander.xyz" | count
> 10
So this says there are 10 users who are from mander.xyz who have placed at least one pixel on the canvas.
cat pixels.log.txt | grep "place" | awk '{print $3}' | awk -F"@" '{print $1" " $2" "}' | grep "mander.xyz" | count
> 5896
This tells me that there are 5896 pixels that were placed by users from mander.xyz
5896/10 ~= 590
Therefore on average a user from mander.xyz placed 590 pixels on the canvas. (This is very high, you brought the average up really high with your pixel count)
I’m very tired and am having some trouble with math atm, but I hope this explanation makes sense!
73% on my end. Wow!
Thanks for this, now I’m interested in all the other stats, like number of users per instance, %age of instance users per instance, # surviving pixels, %age pixels surviving, overall heatmap (esp. most fought over area), chart of cumulative placements over time, etc.
One of the things that made participating in this fun was that there was very little vandalism. When you started some new project, as long as you got a good outline up to make it clear to others something was happening, you could go to bed and wake up with the project right where you left it.
There was some vandalism, but not very much. A single person could put together their own art so long as they kept it small and manageable. On r/place you needed a team to fight the vandals or you had no hope.
What I’m getting at is I expect there probably isn’t a whole lot to show in a heat map, but for sure there would be some areas. Perhaps not as exciting of a heat map as r/place though.
I actually like that about this Canvas. The competition for space is much less intense so there was more of a collaboration than a competition vibe to the whole place.
Absolutely, it was great going to bed being pretry confident everything would still be there when you woke up.
I suspect future events will have a different feel, if we start with a lot more users participating.
Thought: # of remaining virgin pixels is a little clouded by a couple things: people making mistakes then whiting them out, and people using default white space as part of designs
(not sure what you mean by # surviving pixels, but this was my first thought)
I’d like to see an overall heat map, yeah. I know that area in the top left quadrant with the four-color paint roller used to be something else that a user and their multiple alts tried hard to get on the Canvas.
Ah, that’s more interesting than what I had in mind; I just meant how many pixels a user placed that weren’t overwritten.
Ah, that’s a neat thing to find out too.
Lemmy.nz winning per capita
oh yeah I’m curious to see an average-pixels-per-user for each instance
I did this by hand, so that’s why this isn’t all of them. I just did the top 5 plus lemmy.nz. I don’t know if I got the users / instance right, but the results seem reasonable.

Wtf… I think this may be a record 😂
Edit: I added you to the list lol Do you want a canvas with all the pixels you’ve placed?
It would also be interesting to do a pixel per resisted user (or active users) on an instance - not that I’m trying to make work for you…
I’ve seen the post with the script to generate the images, thanks
You did and it was hilariously absurd.
I also had another 1200 pixels on lemmy.nz count
Wow, that’s like 3000 pixels total.
With say an average of 300 pixels per user and a 628000 pixel total it puts the total users at 2100. I would want someone else to double check my results tho as my brain is just pixels now

I wanted to add this as a comment to another post, but for some reason I couldn’t post spoilers with a table in it?
Seems to work for me?
