The Osaka District Court on July 4 recognized an African man in his 30s who fled to Japan from his own country fearing persecution for his homosexuality as a refugee, overturning a government decision not to grant him asylum.

After his family found out that he was gay, he was confined in his home and beaten by his father and younger brother.     Ministry of Justice statistics show that between 2016 and 2019, more than 10,000 people applied for asylum in Japan every year, but only 20 to 44 individuals were granted refugee status. The recognition rate falls below 0.5%, and it is difficult to acquire refugee status in Japan.

    For any country, that is shameful. For a country with an aging population, it is just plain stupid.
