Sometimes it’s hard to sift through the wealth of media available from over 20 countries. I have only scratched the surface and am grateful that I struck gold with the following. I hope these recs help others! The following are shows in Spanish (I only titled it “Spanish sitcoms” for brevity) that specifically have a sitcom vibe to me and that I have liked very much (edit: so not the only shows I’ve liked, for the record!):

Cuerpo de élite <-- Spain. Still the best show I have seen in Spanish so far if we go by how many times I rewatch it, which is constantly. 13 brilliant episodes. Light-hearted, witty, and hilarious, it’s the cross between Friends and Mr. and Mrs. Smith that you never knew that you needed. It’s about a group of spies who work for the Spanish government. Do not see the film. Terrible, completely different cast; will prejudice you against the show. You have been warned. I say this because you’ll search for the show on Netflix and find the film instead. The show is available on Pantaya, RTVE–I think–and the many free online mirror sites that I’m sure you’ve found by now.

Hermanos y detectives <-- Argentina. Also unfortunately only 13 brilliant episodes, has a Psych feel. It’s about a police officer who finds a new partner in the half-brother he never knew he had. The half-brother is a third of his age–and brilliant. This show delivers. It makes what seems like a ridiculous premise feel surprisingly realistic, considering, the writing is stellar, the cases are interesting, and it has one of the catchiest theme songs. I had to rewind several parts because I was laughing so hard, and I wanted to be friends with all the characters (not to overhype it). Available on free online mirror sites. Edit: And YT. I saw it on YT. Although I saw the Argentinian original, there’s also a Spanish remake.

Los simuladores <-- Argentina. Kind of its own thing, but also has a vague Psych feel. It’s probably one of my top three shows in Spanish. It’s better not to spoil the premise, but just know that it’s a classic for a reason. Watch the Argentinian original. It’s so good that other countries have done remakes, as a heads-up. (Randomly, one of the few shows where I stopped an episode to find a song because I liked it so much: “Milazzo’s theme.” The soundtrack is superb, in other words, and I’m pretty sure every Argentinian [and a lot of Spanish speakers in general] can recognize the theme song within three seconds.)

Bienvenidos a la familia <-- Spain. Modern Family/Malcolm in the Middle vibe. It’s about a rowdy family that has to deal with the sudden death of a grandfather they never met. Despite that premise, it is very much a comedy (the grandfather was a jerk lol). I liked it so much that I wrote a Reddit post about it here. Available on Netflix.

Vota Juan <-- Spain. It’s like a cross between Parks/Rec and The Office. I don’t see it mentioned often, which is weird because I find it hilarious. The main character is essentially Michael Scott as a politician. And just like The Office (for me, at least), although yes, Juan is funny, it’s the supporting cast that carries the show. Available on Pantaya.

Los espookys <-- US. Don’t let the weird name deter you. That’s what happened to me. There was something about the name that kept making me skip it. Big mistake. This show is hilarious and was a breath of fresh air after the many dramas I had consumed. Like Los simuladores, this one is kind of its own thing, but the overall vibe is Arrested Development/Always Sunny in Philadelphia (but less manic)/SNL/What We Do In The Shadows. Only 6 perfect episodes so far, unfortunately. It occasionally mixes in English, as a heads-up. HBO Max, but I just watched it online via a mirror site.

    Honorable mentions:

El vecino <-- Spain. It’s worth seeing if you haven’t already. A regular schlub in Spain suddenly gets superpowers dumped in his lap. Netflix.

El cartel de los burritos <-- Mexico. YT miniseries, animated. If you find South Park funny, you’ll probably find this funny. A hard-working burrito restaurant owner doesn’t realize that his business has become a front for drugs(!) It turns out that I don’t mind a cartel show if it’s played for laughs. Unfortunately, only 20 amazing episodes. (It’s only under Honorable Mentions because the format isn’t a sitcom. It’s one of my favorite shows in Spanish.)

El siguiente programa <-- Colombia. Available on YT, animated. Satirizes Colombian society. Has a Daria and/or Ugly Americans feel and is also from Daria’s era. It takes a few episodes before you figure out where they’re headed with it (Reinocracia, qué desgracia: Parte II is when it hits its stride for me). Some of the humor is dated, but I include it because the parts that I found funny, I really found funny. You will learn a lot about Colombian pop culture. (Often, when I heard a reference [usually an altered name, as a heads-up, so the Colombian equivalent of “Gil Finton” instead of “Bill Clinton”], I had to look it up, go back to the episode, and then think, “Oh, LOL that is hilarious, well done.”)

Estoy vivo <-- Spain. More of a drama with funny parts, but I list it because it is a great show, and the premise is so novel. It’s about a police officer/genuine family man who dies but is reincarnated in a different body, and what happens after. It’s got kind of a The Good Place vibe. But if TGP is 70% funny, 30% poignant, this show is the reverse. Found on RTVE I think, but I watched it via a mirror site.
