I’ve heard that people feel more relaxed when they hear the background of people chattering (we are really social animals lol) so that might explain why white noise it seems to be commonly needed to sleep, but is it really a universal thing?

    Universally, no. I do think it has to do with sleeping conditions through childhood though. My partner needs quiet to sleep, while I enjoy lectures or poscasts.
