    How is this better than a normal messaging protocol like Matrix? What does blockchain add to the solution?

        I don’t think that’s a feature exclusive to blockchain, though? I could imagine portable identity being implemented pretty easily with normal signatures. A user could hold a private key, and they could prove their identity to any server by proving control over it, no need for gigabytes of state history on disk.
