redditors on the whole are irrational manchildren prone to misogynist hatemobbing and i completely understand why you would jump to that conclusion. let me be clear: there’s a full on hate mob for Pizzacake, they’ve got their dedicated subreddit with a big list of Reasons Pizzacake Is A Bad Person pinned to the top, and what i skimmed of it is a lot of triggered incel manlet crap. maybe there’s something in there that justifies it but i’m not inclined to think so.
me, i just like comic strips. i was glad to see her pop up at first, like cool a web strip by and about a woman. yay societal progress. yeah cool she has the same opinions as me on a lot of stuff and isn’t afraid to be open about it. wonderful. Pizzacake has consistently found her way onto my screen on a very regular basis for years and i feel like i’m a bit more familiar with her work than “only seen a small amount”.
i want to be perfectly clear that i don’t know shit about Pizzacake beyond her comic strip, and i’m not interested in passing moral judgment. i’m just talking about art here.
her comics haven’t improved much over time. they were and still are characterized by poor and inconsistent anatomy, lack of depth, poor grasp of perspective, and clumsy shading. they’re not stylistically coherent, or particularly visually interesting, even in this post the visual gag falls flat because even the “action” panel feels stiff and static. it more or less looks like Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and it’s not even a little bit controversial to say that Ctrl+Alt+Delete looks like shit.
it’s been a long time since one of her comics even got a reaction out of me past “uh, okay?” there’s no particular effort in the gags either. at this phase the punchline is supposed to be the viewer being like “haha this affirms my preexisting opinion” and picturing “the other guys” getting huffy about it. this particular one isn’t even a joke, there is no discernable joke in this comic. it’s not fun or interesting to read, there’s no humorous angle, no creative device, no funny dialogue, it’s just a rage fantasy and not even an interesting one. hell she didn’t even bother with a fun caricature. maybe it’s supposed to be a visual gag, and if so it’s a misstep on her part because her art work is just not up to the task.
it’s just not an enjoyable comic to me from either an aesthetic perspective or a humor perspective, and it honestly feels like her focus is more on internet tribalism and accruing affirmation than honing her craft, and that bums me out because i did like her stuff early on and it feels like she could and should be doing so much better.
